The goal of this book is to explain thermodynamics in a modern and appealing way、 with many practical examples and without forgetting to convey the students awe and if possible even amusement、 always crucial to fix and retain concepts.
Fundamental equations are derived from basic physical ideas、 historical facts are given in order to frame contents in the proper order. The book begins with the derivation of the “ideal gas law” and ends with Planck's “Black-body radiation” statistic、 the very first quantum mechanical equation in human history.
We based ourselves on classics like “The Feynman Lectures on Physics” by Nobel Laureate R. Feynman、 and other top level textbooks that are focused to transmit the student the feeling that he really understands the physical concepts、 not that he only remembers or can use a formula to solve problems.
This book was written for the students of Physics in Yokohama City University、 a Japanese University centered on Globalization and Internationalization. This university has many program of exchange with several universities in the world、 including universities in Asia、 Europe and United States. The left page of this book is in English (as the actual course) and the right is in Japanese、 with technical terms and specific English expression translated in contemporary Japanese with the use of special footnotes.
This book can be of paramount importance for any foreigner physics student in Japan、 because technical expressions、 terms and phrases have its Japanese counterpart in the adjacent page、 a convenient way to learn physical and technical Japanese while studying Thermodynamics.
